The Situation
Our Client was seeking divorce from her retired professional athlete husband.
The Concern
The soon-to-be ex-husband had a long history of philandering, and was suspected of having several children throughout the U.S. and supporting their mothers with marital assets.
Our Client
She was the long-suffering wife of a successful professional athlete. Over the course of their 21-year marriage, he had traveled a lot and betrayed her – a lot.
His/Her Version of the Story
During his successful sports career, her husband had made a LOT of money. So much that she never really knew how much he made. They lacked for nothing, and the future looked bright for their two children. Over the years, however, there appeared to be a tightening of the belt that was inconsistent with his popularity. She began to suspect a significant amount of money was being redirected for other things. She had caught him in various indiscretions, but she didn’t know how far those relationships went. Unknown to her, he was getting better at covering his tracks.
Once he retired, there was a definite drop in income, and the budget became much tighter. It still didn’t make sense to her, and she suspected that he could be supporting another woman/family. She resolved to file for divorce, but in order to make sure her children were properly provided for, she would have to prove that he was misappropriating marital assets to support his infidelity. So, she hired Blackfish.
Our Findings
After some in-depth Open-source investigation, it became clear that our subject considered himself a Lothario, and we were able to identify several women who claimed close relationships with him. One woman in particular, however, had a child and appeared to be living locally in Texas, but her specific address was nowhere to be found. This indicated she was living with someone else, or under another name. We tried every trick in the book, but she was like a ghost, moving from place to place. The investigation stretched out, and we were afraid we weren’t going to get what the client needed before her upcoming hearing. However, our team is very creative, and we figured out how to find her. From her online activity, we knew she was very interested in collecting a certain brand of athletic sneakers, so we bought the freshest, nicest pair we could find, and sent them to her dad in another state; but we had sewn an Apple airtag into the tongue of one of the shoes. We were tracking a shipment, not a person, which is legal. We anticipated her dad forwarding the shoes to her, which he did, leading us straight to the apartment he had rented for her under the name of one of his associates. We were able to get her served with a subpoena to appear in court with her child to submit to a paternity test.
The Outcome
We provided all the evidence our client needed to prove her husband had been misdirecting marital assets for years, resulting in the judge giving her a very generous support settlement.
